Prevalence Rate of Sleeplessness Complications After the Night -Working-Hours in Nursing Personnel of Tabriz Educational and Medical Centers, 2002

Abstract

Background: The present research is a descriptive study, conducted in fall 2002, Tabriz, Iran, in order to inquire the prevalence rate of sleeplessness complications after the night-working hours in nurses. As a data collection method, a questionnaire comprising 25 personal and general questions on sleeplessness complications was designed and administrated based on Likert measurement of all or nothing range.

Methods: The number of nurses who were participated in the research was 100 and they were selected through easy sampling and non-random method from the nursing personnel of Tabriz educational and medical centers who had at least 2-3 night-working hours per-week in one-year time period.

Results: Based on the results of the study 69% of the nurses had a medium adaptation, 20% weak and 11 % showed a good adaptation of sleeplessness complications after the night-working hours. In ranking from 0 to 66, the mean of the adaptation rate of female nurses to of sleeplessness after the night-working-hours was measured 34.67 with the standard deviation of 18.3 and the mean of the adaptation rate of male nurses to of sleeplessness after the night-working-hours was measured as 38.57 with the standard deviation of 10.68. Considering the t-test method of independent groups, the difference is statistically meaningful (P=0.03).

Conclusion: On the results of the study it can be claimed that nurses are potential patients of the future and their physical, mental and social health is in great jeopardy. Therefore, it can be suggested that authorities night-working-hours in nurses and their families, should benefit from necessary relevant knowledge and take suitable measure in order to prevent the complications as much as possible.
