Abstract

The aim of present study was to evaluate the genetic medicine in Hamadan. For this purpose, 270 couples that had come to Fattemieh Clinic of Genetics were reviewed. The results showed that frequencies of consanguinity marriages were 80.8%. The most frequent type of consanguinity was marriages of the first cousins (80.3%). The most frequent cause for visiting the genetic counselor was "counseling about the genetic status of their marriages" (73.3%) and infertility was the least frequent reason (4.8%). (46.3% of referred couples visited the counselor before their marriages. Only 25% of couples had been referred by physicians, mostly by gynecologists. The majority of subject couples were urban. We can conclude that in general population especially in urban young couples the behavior is in a rather good direction, adopted with the goals of the genetic medicine, but it seems that the physicians in Hamadan are not involved with its aims.
